About The Loney's of Limehouse
The LONEY surname is quite uncommon, which I soon discovered when I started
researching my own ancestors, who came predominantly from the East End of London.
In my research, I began to record information on ALL the Loney's I came across,
just in case it proved useful later on. I include the results of my research which
includes:-
1 BMD Records
ALL Loney's registered on BMD records, have been extracted directly from the index
images themselves. I have yet to add All the registration details on this site
(All Births addded so far, plus some Marriages and Deaths), but more is
available, and will be added as and when I can.
2 Census Records
For this data, I am reliant on transcribed indexes, which as you may be aware, are not
very accurate. When people couldn't read or write, the enumerators had to interpret
peoples surnames for themselves so LONEY could be written as LONY, LONNIE, LOONEY etc.
Most indexes are transcribed from the enumerators written records. If the numerator had
poor handwriting, transcription errors are bound to creep in. From experience, I have
found LONEY transcribed as LOUEY, HALIFAX as STALEFORT, HONITON as STONETON.
3. Parish records
I have recently been accessing available Christening and Marriage records from the
parish registers which have been transcribe by the LDS. I have been very cautious with
LDS records, as some of the information is provided by church members from their own
research, which is not verifiable, so has not been used. The only information I have
used is from their extraction programme, where church members extract data from the
parish records in batches, then a batch numbers is allocated when it is entered into
their main database. I have noted the batch number, which you may use to locate the
actual parish register from which the data was extracted. If you wish to see the actual
entry for yourself, note the Location and Batch number, then click on the 'IGI Batch
Number Search' link below. This will take you to the IGI search screen, provided by
Hugh Wallis, to whom I give special thanks for the effort he has put in on our behalf.
Over the the past few months, I have started reviewing the data on this site, and
wherever possible, have added details of the source of the data. This is an ongoing
process, and some sources have yet to be added.
WARNING
A lot of the relationships shown on the site have been deduced from the above record
sources and MAY BE INCORRECT. If you spot an error, please let me know, and I'll
correct it for others to use.
Examples of the kind of deductions I have used are as follow:
1. A marriage record on BMD gives a choice of Mary Jones or Mary Smith for the
spouse, and on the census I find the individual living with a mother-in-law
called Mrs Smith, I have assumed his spouse was Mary Smith.
2. A marriage record on BMD gives a choice of Mary Jones or Jane Smith for the
spouse, and on the census I find the individual living with a wife called Jane,
I have assumed his spouse was Jane Smith.
3. A marriage record on BMD gives a choice of Mary Jones or Tryphena Smith for
the spouse, and on the BMD I find a death record for a Tryphena in the same
area, I have assumed his spouse was Tryphena Smith.
Apart from my transcription errors, which are hopefully few, the only other
transcription errors are those made when the original indexes were created (see above).
My aim is to find as many relationships as possible from this data, and so
reduce the number of distinct families as much as I can.
I therefore welcome any information on the Loney clan. Information concerning
other surnames is also welcome of course. So if you know of any relationship between
two Loney's (e.g. Siblings, Parent/Child etc.) that is not shown on this site, do let
me know.
Finally, I wish thank all those kind people who add this information to the
internet for our mutual benefit. I will add source references whenever I can,
but if I forget, please accept my apologies, or better still, contact me and I will
endeavour to add the relevant information as soon as possible. I just hope that my
efforts in producing the information on this site, will benefit others as much as yours
has benefited me!
Michael William Loney
